When your gutters become clogged, your home is at risk of water damage. The landscaping can get ruined, the exterior of your home damaged, and the foundation of your home can suffer when the gutters of your home are clogged. Gutters should be cleaned twice a year to make sure that water can flow freely through your gutter system and away from your home.
If your Gutters are Clogged
There are a number of signs that indicate your gutters are clogged with debris and need to be cleaned out. If it is raining out, a clogged gutter will spill water over the side of the gutter because water can’t get down through the gutter itself. You might see water spraying out of gutter seams because it doesn’t have anywhere else to go. If you don’t see water flowing out of your downspouts, you probably have a clog somewhere.
If it’s not raining out, clogged gutters can still be noticeable. When the gutter gets clogged, the heavy weight can cause the gutter to pull away from the house. You might see sagging gutters, dirty siding below the gutter, or a ruined garden bed below the gutter if you have a clog somewhere.
How to Fix a Gutter Clog
When you are able to identify where a clog is in your gutter system, you may be able to remove the clog on your own. If you are unable to reach your gutters or you don’t feel comfortable going on a ladder, you will need professional help to remove the clog. If the clog is in your downspout, you may be able to clear out the downspout by removing it from the side of your home and using a hose to clean it out. If you need gutter repairs and you aren’t sure what you are doing, cleaning out your gutters and making repairs is always best left up to a professional who can handle the job for you.
